Maintenance is a hard thing to buy, because nothing is wrong yet. Electrical has one argument the rest of the trade cannot make, and it happens to be true.
A failing supply line drips. A tank starts weeping. A drain slows down for weeks first. Plumbing is generous that way: it leaves stains, puddles and noises, and you get a warning you can act on before the expensive version arrives.
A loose connection in a panel heats up quietly behind a steel door. Insulation degrades inside a wall where nobody looks. A breaker slowly stops being able to trip. None of it leaves a puddle, and often the first sign anybody gets is a smell or smoke.
This is the list we work through, what we are looking for at each one, and what it means when something fails. Nothing here is a guess, and nothing gets skipped because the weather is bad or the panel is awkward to reach.

If it fails: you think you are protected and you are not, which is worse than knowing you never were.
Standby generators and battery backups run up and tested under load, plus the transfer switch that hands over to them.
If it fails: you discover it during the storm, which is the only time it was ever going to matter.
Fixtures, lamps and controls checked, along with the wiring behind them rather than just what has burned out.
If it fails: repeated lamp failures in one fixture usually mean a wiring or connection problem, not bad bulbs.
That equipment spaces can actually shed heat, and have not been quietly turned into storage cupboards.
If it fails: equipment runs hot, ages fast and fails early, and heat is the common factor in most of this list.

A loose connection tightened during an inspection costs almost nothing. The same connection found after it has arced and damaged the panel is a different job entirely, and the version after that involves your insurer.
It depends on the age of the system, how hard it works and what has been added to it over the years. An older house that has had circuits bolted on over decades needs looking at more often than a recent build. Commercial premises and anywhere with backup systems generally justify a regular schedule. That is exactly the point, and it is a fair question. The honest answer is that electrical faults do not announce themselves the way plumbing does. Loose connections, degraded insulation and worn breakers all develop silently, and the first symptom is often the expensive one. If your system is newer and nothing has been added, you may well not need us often. We will tell you that too.
